| Noble County Learning Center This is such an exciting time for the Noble County Learning Center (NCLC)! We have grown so much since we opened our doors in 2002 and we continue to enjoy our work in with this wonderful community. I’d like to take this opportunity to let you know more about the NCLC and our successes. We currently have 10 qualified tutors working Monday-Saturday to serve the needs of the various individuals that attend the NCLC. Each tutor brings different talents and backgrounds to the learning center. We have college students, certified teachers, and tutors with Master’s degrees. All of them do a fantastic job and care about the success of the students they serve. The learning center serves approximately 90 students a week in one-on-one tutoring sessions. These students range from preschool age to individuals in their seventies. We also have a waiting list of 50 people who are waiting for our services. Last year, students spent 3273 hours in the learning center, which was a 23% increase from the previous year. If our current number of hours stay on track, then we will have a 25% increase this year. These are examples of how much the learning center and LEAP have grown to be an integral part of the community. We will continue to strive to do our best to meet the needs of every person who wants to attend the NCLC. Our main area of focus continues to be tutoring and homework help. However, there are a few other areas that we do provide, including: Plato educational software, computer training software, and KeyTrain. We have partnered with the IMPACT program and Bosch to provide the KeyTrain program. This program helps to assess and train individuals in skills needed for the workforce. We hope to continue partnerships with more businesses and organizations in the future. We are now able to document the progress made by our students. The Individual Learning Plans help the Learning Center staff communicate effectively with parents and teachers and provides a measure of consistency for each student. The quality of the tutoring services offered is remarkable and is demonstrated by our progress data from last year. 72% of our students showed academic growth during the 2003-2004 year. This speaks to the effectiveness of our tutors and the dedication of our students. One of our learning center students eloquently stated that “the learning center gives a person the chance to receive a new outlook on life…” She also shared that “places like this are quite important to the community and surrounding cities.” We hope that you, as members of our community, will continue to support LEAP and the learning center through volunteering, financial contributions, and advocacy. |
